What My Birthday Taught Me About Gratefulness — and Telling the Truth
June 2, 2026
Gratefulness Does Not Mean Pretending Everything is Fine
As I reflect on another year of life, I'm reminded that gratefulness and honesty can exist in the same breath. And honestly, it feels important to say that loudly.
Sometimes people talk about gratitude like it means you're not allowed to want anything else. If you're grateful for your life, your family, your work, your blessings, your survival, then you should not also feel tired, disappointed, overwhelmed, lonely, or unsure. But as a Black woman and as a therapist, I know life is usually more layered than that.
You can be deeply grateful and still be grieving something.
You can appreciate the people in your life and still realize some relationships need clearer boundaries.
You can love your family and still need space to breathe.
You can be proud of how far you've come and still admit that you are exhausted from always having to hold it all together.
You can honor your growth and celebrate your wins, and still tell the truth that something inside of you needs care.
That is not being ungrateful. That is being honest.
This birthday reminded me that gratefulness does not require pretending. It does not mean silencing the part of you that is asking for more peace, more support, more clarity, or more room to become who you are now.
Many of the women I work with are doing a lot. They are showing up for their families, careers, communities, friendships, and responsibilities. From the outside, they may look like they are holding it all together. But inside, they are often trying to make sense of what they need, what they feel, what they want, and who they are becoming.
Therapy can be a space to put all of that down for a moment. A space where you don't have to perform, be the strong one. It can be a space where you can be grateful for your life and still be honest about what feels heavy.
If this resonates with you, I'd be honored to support you through therapy.
